Once your child understands unit fractions, it’s time to build larger fractions. This is a big moment—because this is where many kids either gain confidence or start to feel lost.
Here’s the truth: fractions don’t make sense when kids are taught to memorize rules. They make sense when kids see that fractions are real pieces of something real. Building fractions by combining unit fractions helps children understand what the numbers actually mean, not just how to write them.
When kids understand fractions, everything gets easier—comparing, adding, simplifying, and even decimals later on.
Step 1: Start With a Unit Fraction
A unit fraction is one equal part of a whole.
Example:
1/4 means one part out of four equal parts.
Before moving on, pause here. This step matters more than it seems.
How to Show It Visually
Draw a circle or rectangle
Divide it into four equal parts
Shade one part and say it out loud:
“This is one-fourth.”
👉 The goal is not speed. The goal is understanding.
When kids rush past unit fractions, bigger fractions feel random. When they understand unit fractions, bigger fractions feel logical.
Step 2: Combine Unit Fractions
Now comes the part that replaces memorizing with meaning.
Instead of saying, “Here’s the rule,” we show kids how fractions are built.
Examples
2/4 = 1/4 + 1/4
3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4
Each time, you’re adding the same-sized piece.

Stop memorizing—build fractions visually.
When kids see that the pieces stay the same size and only the number of pieces changes, the numerator and denominator suddenly make sense.
Step 3: Practice Naming the Fractions
This step strengthens both math understanding and math language.
Have your child count the shaded pieces aloud:
“One… two… three…”
Then say: “Three out of four—three-fourths!”
This connects:
What they see
What they count
What they say
Try Different Denominators
1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3
1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
Ask questions like:
“How many pieces are there altogether?”
“Are the pieces the same size?”
These questions build thinking—not just answers.
Step 4: Real-Life Practice
Fractions stick when kids see them outside a worksheet.
Easy Ideas
Blocks or coins: Group them to show fractions
Fruit or snacks: Cut into equal parts
Paper folding: Fold, shade, and count
Drawing: Shade parts of a shape together
Real-life practice tells kids: “Fractions aren’t just school math—they’re everywhere.”

When kids understand:
They know why the numbers look the way they do
They can explain their thinking
